Discerning the Origin of Your Struggles: Self, God, or Satan?
Self-Reflection and Spiritual Discernment:
As believers, discerning the origin of our struggles can be both challenging and crucial. Let’s explore this spiritual terrain together.
When facing challenges, it’s essential to engage in self-reflection and seek spiritual discernment. Ask yourself:
- Is this struggle a consequence of my own choices or actions?
- Am I wrestling with internal battles—my thoughts, emotions, or desires?
Is there an area in my life where I need to grow or learn?
Remember that God grants wisdom to those who seek it (James 1:5).
God’s Sovereignty and Lessons:
Sometimes God allows struggles to teach us valuable lessons. These lessons may involve character development, faith-building, or reliance on Him.
~ Consider whether the struggle aligns with biblical principles and whether it draws you closer to God.
Spiritual Warfare:
Satan is a real adversary, seeking to undermine our faith and hinder our relationship with God.
-Signs of spiritual warfare include:
- Opposition to God’s purposes: When you’re pursuing God’s will, expect resistance.
- Relentless attacks: If the struggle persists despite your efforts, consider spiritual warfare.
- Negative thoughts and emotions: Satan often attacks our minds and emotions.
Seek God’s protection, put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), and resist the enemy.
Our choices matter:
Sometimes struggles result from poor decisions, disobedience, or neglect.
- Evaluate whether your actions contributed to the battle.
- Repentance and alignment with God’s will, can lead to victory.
- Remember, the battle is multifaceted. It involves our own hearts, God’s sovereignty, and spiritual forces. Seek God’s guidance, study His Word, and rely on His strength. Victory is assured through Christ, who conquered sin and death.
The Battle Was Decisively Won!
The adversary of our souls would love nothing more than for each of us to believe we are fighting for victory rather than from victory. When Christ died on the cross in our place, paying the penalty for sin, the battle was decisively won. We emerged victorious! God holds the entire world in His hands and has paved a way for us to spend eternity with Jesus.
So why do we still struggle? Because the earth is where we continue to reside. We face a genuine adversary, and as long as we are alive, we will have conflict with him. But fear not! If we live our lives in Christ, we will always wield greater power than anything that comes our way. The Bible is clear that we should not be ignorant of our enemy.
The Devil is an An Angel with a God Complex!
You might envision God and the Devil as equal and opposing forces locked in combat from opposite sides, akin to the cartoon image of a devil and an angel perched on someone’s shoulders. However, let’s clarify: The story of God and the Devil isn’t one of two gods battling each other. The Devil is an angel with a God complex. His power and authority exist solely because God has permitted him to persist—for now.
The Devil is a Liar!
To recognize your enemy, you must understand his precise characteristics. The Devil’s entire purpose is to deceive you about God. It began in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. His lies sound like this: “God isn’t truly good” or “God isn’t revealing the whole truth.” These falsehoods run deeper: “God made a mistake when creating you” or “God won’t assist you.”
All of these lies revolve around distorting our perception of God. One of his most potent lies always targets our identity. It whispers, “You can’t do it” or “You lack what it takes.” His words are cloaked in fear, anxiety, and shame.
Remember, you are stronger than those whispers. Your identity is not defined by fear or shame. You have the power to rise above and embrace your true self.
The Devil is an Accuser!
Our adversary delights in accusing us. He is known as the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12).
Once we embrace spiritual confidence, he employs another deception. “Who do you think you are?” he taunts, attempting to accuse us of pride and arrogance. He revels in using accusations to halt our progress. An accusation asserts that someone is doing something wrong.
But our enemy doesn’t stop there. He persistently pushes further, hoping we’ll succumb to the lie: “You are wrong” or “You were inherently flawed.” Accusations are perilous because they invariably divert us from our true purpose—to live the abundant life that Christ sacrificed for us.
The Devil is a Deceiver
In John 10:10, the depiction of our enemy’s character is profound. The verse states, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”
The Greek word for “steal” is “klepto”, from which we derive the term “kleptomaniac”—someone who steals for the thrill of taking. When the enemy operates in our lives, he is indeed stealing from us. Although we may not immediately recognize it, eventually, we sense the loss and realize that what rightfully belongs to us has been taken away. To walk in daily victory, we must remain aware that the enemy enters our lives as a thief.
The Devils Smoke Screens!
In John 10:10, the word “kill” is used, but its meaning in Greek is Thuo, which translates to sacrifice. The enemy’s tactics involve smoke screens, whispering that God won’t come through for you or that your experiences won’t manifest. When the enemy seeks to kill, he hopes you’ll sacrifice everything God has bestowed upon you. He convinces you that waiting too long or believing too much won’t yield any results, urging you to throw in the towel and quit.
The Devil doesn’t need to steal much from us because we’re already giving it away to him. Remarkably, we often fall for these lies
Staying Informed and Discerning
The following verse is from 2 Corinthians 2:11 in the Amplified Bible (AMP). It reads: “to keep Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.” 12
This powerful statement reminds us to be vigilant and aware of the enemy’s tactics. Ignorance can indeed be detrimental, especially in matters of faith and spirituality. By staying informed and discerning, we can better navigate the challenges we face.
The Vulnerability of Ignorance
The saying “Ignorance is bliss” implies that not knowing certain things can make life easier. However, in the context of spiritual warfare, ignorance leaves us vulnerable.
Satan, the enemy, is cunning and strategic. If we remain unaware of his tactics, we become easy prey.
Ignorance doesn’t exempt us from spiritual battles; it simply means we fight blindly.
Being Spiritual Illiterate:
Being spiritually illiterate doesn’t grant immunity. Instead, it increases the likelihood of making critical mistakes.
Lack of understanding leads to confusion, discouragement, and deception!
God desires informed warriors, not blind followers.
Be Spiritually Vigilante: Indeed, the words from Matthew 26:41 remind us of the importance of spiritual vigilance. Let’s break down this powerful message:
Recognize Subtle Attacks: Jesus encourages us to be alert spiritually. Just as a watchman keeps watch over a city, we are called to be watchful over our hearts, minds, and souls. This alertness helps us recognize the subtle attacks of the enemy.
Recognizing Enemy’s Tactics: Awareness equips us to discern the enemy’s schemes. The adversary seeks to deceive, distract, and discourage us. By studying God’s Word and spending time in prayer, we gain insight into recognizing the enemy’s tactics.
Resist Temptation: When we recognize the enemy’s strategies, we can stand firm. Like a well-rooted tree withstands the storm, our faith remains unshaken when we rely on God’s truth. Discernment empowers us to resist temptation and remain steadfast.
Light Dispels Darkness: Darkness cannot withstand light. When we seek knowledge, we invite God’s light into our lives. His truth dispels confusion, fear, and doubt. Let’s walk in this light, knowing that it guides our steps.
In summary, let’s stay spiritually alert, study God’s Word, pray fervently, and walk in the truth. May His light illuminate our path as we navigate life’s challenges.
